Units with 3 or 4 in this stat will melt armoured units like hoplites when flanking them.Ĭavalry are pretty much the same. This stat is strangely named since it's basically just the vs armour bonus. In DEI pay attention to the "weapon deadliness" stat on some units (mostly guys with axes, maces or very good swords).

Slingers wipe out archers and archers are fantastic for morale shocks with flaming arrows.

Skirmishers annihilate armoured troops (hoplites!) from the flanks and rear. Swords beat spears in a fair fight, although elite spears will beat cheapo swordsmen. Regarding other units the roles are pretty much the same. Usually a single right-click is better to keep them fighting properly. They'll do more damage at the cost of becoming more vulnerable. You can double-right-click an enemy unit they're already fighting to push forward. One other point about hoplites is that they have a new mechanic in DEI. Pikes are even more difficult for melee units to get through from the front, although their smaller shields make it possible to wear them down with missiles. In DEI if hoplites are plugging a gap, then that gap is plugged effectively forever unless you can get around behind. I've won defensive fort battles against a full stack with 6 units of levy hoplites, a general and a scattering of slingers.

What's more, they'll laugh off even concentrated frontal missile fire. Only elite specialist units can break through from the front, and even they'll take expensive amounts of casualties doing so. Hold a point with hoplites using phalanx formation and so long as they don't get flanked they'll hold that point until your enemy is exhausted and broken upon their formation. For hoplites, with DEI you can finally enjoy using them in a way that you may have always wished to.
